East Canyon in Utah - Milky Way?
A couple of weeks ago, I took a friend up to East Canyon Dam and Reservoir to show him how I capture Milky Way photos. I picked him up at 3:00 a.m., and we pulled up to the dam around 3:50 a.m. After about fifteen minutes of setting up the camera, tripod, and lenses, I double-checked the Photopills app to confirm our timing and positioning were spot on.
The only problem? The sky was hazy with thin clouds, and the Milky Way was nowhere to be seen with the naked eye. Still, we decided to shoot anyway.
If you look closely at the left side of the image, you can just barely make out the faint glow of our galaxy. Keep in mind that visibility can vary a lot depending on your monitor, brightness settings, and even the device you’re viewing it on.
This isn’t one of my best Milky Way shots, but it’s a perfect example of how challenging this kind of photography can be. Conditions play a huge role—sometimes you drive for hours, wake up in the middle of the night, and still have to work with what Mother Nature gives you. That’s part of what makes a great shot feel so rewarding when everything finally lines up.
